In order to run the brother_ql command line utility, the directoryit resides in needs to be in the PATH envirnoment variable. First I installed CUPS and LPR and cupswrapper drivers from Brothers website, and now my QL-720NW shows up in the CUPS web interface. I set the default media size to fit my label(29x90mm). I clicked "Test print page" on the QL-720NW and it says "Sending data to printer." a few seconds, and then disappears and changing state to Idle, Accepting Jobs, Not Shared, Server Default. But my printer does nothing, not even a led light blinking.

I tried on Debian first, after learning from @sampi that he got it to work on Debian. When installing the drivers I got an error message, which I didn't get on Ubuntu, suggesting a 32/64bit issue. So after installing the ia32-libs packages it worked on Debian. I then tried installing a 32bit version of Ubuntu on my server, and now the printer did work.

I have used a QL-720NW with Debian since September. Using first the QL-580N driver & later, once it got released, the QL-720NW driver. Prior to buying the printer I did contact brother support who, within a very helpful response, told me that the printer worked as a network printer with the older product's driver, but not over USB.

FWIW: On Debian testing, I just installed the drivers from the Brother site (version 1.0.1 for both) and the QL-720nw printed via USB with no issues. I didn't even have to force anything (I already had multiarch installed to support other stupid 32-bit-only software), nor use any workaround. I haven't yet tried to use it on a network.

The online install.brother utility found the QL-820NWB over the USB connection and downloaded and installed the appropriate software without a hitch, allowing me to choose my network connectivity method along the way. In addition to the drivers, the software included both Windows and Mac versions of P-touch Editor 5.1 and P-touch Update Software, as well as P-touch Address Book 1.2 for Windows.

You can use with the p-touch editor (free on apple store), if you want to print from others application, download last printer drivers from brothers site, the one for Catalina, then you can install it with the Brother QL-700 cups and now you can print virtually from everywhere.

Could you please expand on your reply? I'm trying to install brother label printer QL-700 on Monterey. No success. There is no driver for this version, but the p-touch doesn't work if I cannot connect the printer. I installed driver for Catalana (as you recommended), but not sure what you mean by "install it with the Brother QL-700 cups"... what is that?

After you've installed the Catalina's drivers go to system preferences, printer and scanner, click on the + to add a printer , select the Brother usb printer, click on use, search for ql-700 and you will find the Brother QL-700 CUPS, select and click ok.

Brother provides a shell script to create udev rules to prevent the use of IPP-over-USB. This might solve USB printing problems but means that you need to use the legacy LPR driver. See the FAQ article.

Chances are that it will work with CUPS generic postscript printer, especially if it is only black & white and only printer, without a scanner added to it.
